“I Lost My Mother”: Lindsey Vonn Makes a Heartfelt Confession on Her Mental Health

Legendary skier, Lindsey Vonn is one of the athletes who has openly talked about their mental health struggles on several occasions. In fact, the 38-year-old frequently reminds people that it is normal to open up about one’s feelings. From a young age, Vonn has battled depression due to a series of life events. Starting from her parent’s divorce when she was young to losing her close ones in 2022, the retired skier faced many breakdowns. However, she courageously fought her blocks and continues to advocate mental wellness globally.

Recently, the champion skier opened up about how she dealt with her dark times. On May 20, Lindsey Vonn took to her Instagram to share a video of her gruesome injuries. Along with it, she mentioned getting up after facing her lowest moments.

In her Instagram video, a fan shared about losing his aunt and facing ups and downs in life. He asked Vonn in the comment section about how she dealt with the mental pain of the rollercoaster of events she faced in her career and life.

To this, she replied, “Honestly, it’s not much different now as it was then. It’s something I have to work on and figure out how to stay in a good place mentally. Working out helps me a lot. I lost my mother, my grandmother, and my dog last year, so I understand. Talking to my therapist helped me the most.”

Vonn explained that she is in a much better place now. She has frequently worked on herself to feel good mentally. Working out and seeking therapy helped her on her difficult days. The skier lost her mother, grandmother, and dog, Bear, the same year in 2022. Things were highly challenging for her, but she got through the pain by understanding what worked out for her.

Apart from this, Vonn also gave out a touching message to her fans for mental wellness.

In her Instagram video, Vonn revisited her bright and dull moments on the slopes during competitions. Putting them as an example, the retired skier wrote that the setbacks while racing taught her how to deal with her life hurdles one at a time. She added, “How do you pick yourself up when you get knocked down? It’s never been easy for me but it has always helped me to focus on putting one foot in front of the other. One step at a time.”

Furthermore, she revealed in her post, that she has battled depression since her teenage years. Still, her weakest moments came when she got injured on the slopes while racing. Vonn indicated that the failure to compete effortlessly made her morose. Hence, she requested her fans to be empathetic while talking to others. She also added that physical bruises are easier to find but it was much harder to understand when someone’s hurting on the inside.

Vonn herself had hidden her mental health struggles from her family for 10 years. However, when she opened up to the world, she realized it was alright to talk about her struggles. Raising awareness about mental wellness and working on herself helped her come a long way.
