“I’ve Been Grooming a Monster”: Shaun White Already Gave the Next Big Icon to Snowboarding Back in 2018

Shaun White has made the sporting world proud. From lovingly accepting a snowboard his mother gave him as a child to signing autographs as a three-time Olympic gold medalist and world champion snowboarder.

Shaun has expressed on several occasions how lucky he feels that the sport has developed during his career’s peak. He always placed the sport above him. His pleasure at meeting a champion serves as further evidence of this. In an interview in 2018, the snowboarding icon expressed delight that someone was gearing up to become the next game changer in snowboarding.

Toby Miller: the next Shaun White?

Eager and aspiring, Toby Miller stumbled upon the legendary snowboarder Shaun White in a fortunate circumstance in 2012. Miller was training with Bud Keenes, and Keenes introduced Miller to White.

As birds of a feather flock together, they quickly bonded, shared a great camaraderie, and started practicing together. “He’ll probably be one of the next guys to blow up,” said the world champion snowboarder, Shaun White.

Upon keen observation, White commented that “He’s definitely got some things,” Shaun also noticed that Miller was learning ahead of ones his age and remarked, “It’s just going to take time to connect it all. He’ll grow into his strength. I could find out that I’ve been grooming a monster.” Shaun boasted.

Who is Toby Miller?

Toby Miller hails from California. He began snowboarding when he was six years old, and today he excels in slopestyle and halfpipe. Miller’s family has been instrumental in pursuing the sport. When he was eight years old, they relocated from Southern California to Lake Tahoe, so he could have easier access to the mountains.

Despite their 14-year age difference, Toby and Shaun quickly became friends. “I look up to him. Who doesn’t? Look at what he’s done for the sport,” Miller shared in an interview about Shaun. “But now, I consider him family. When we’re hanging out, it doesn’t feel like he’s that much older than me. It just feels like two dudes hanging out.”

He started his career in 2014 and has been making steady progress since then. In 2018, he became the Junior World Champion. He injured his right ankle in 2021 and has not participated much since then.

Toby Miller is certainly a hopeful choice to fill the void the retired snowboarder sensation Shaun White left with his retirement. Toby will hopefully be able to lead Team USA to victory in the coming competitions with the help of his loved ones, friends, and renowned pal, White.
