The blessings are raining down on Senegal at the moment. That is the opinion held by Senegalese defender Abdou Diallo. The West African nation will play host to the 2026 Youth Olympic Games. Dakar will form the epicenter of the sporting world for those few weeks. That, as per Diallo, is a move that will help bring sport in his homeland to the forefront.

The 2026 Youth Olympics will be the first event of its standing to be hosted by the continent of Africa. Apart from it being an honor, Abdou Diallo expects it to be an event to mark a new era in Senegalese history. The former Paris Saint-Germain star expects the infrastructure to improve by leaps and bounds, much like his national team.

Abdou Diallo pointed out multiple new stadiums have come up. One of those is the Stade du Senegal-Abdoulaye Wade, inaugurated in 2022. Diallo expects that to be part of the legacy of the 2026 Youth Olympics. The infrastructure, as per the three-time Ligue 1 winner, comprises the first step in achieving significant results. Diallo told Olympics.com, “Having all these stadiums, the results will follow, especially in football (soccer). I hope that in boxing, gymnastics, and athletics results will follow. So, hosting the Youth Olympics is all positive.” Diallo expects the Games to be a historic event in other respects, too.

The 2026 Youth Olympics in Dakar will join the esteemed company. Just like the 2018 Buenos Aires Youth Olympics and the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics, there will be an equal number of female and male athletes competing. Diallo added, “Women and men are equal and if it’s good for men, it’s good for women. So the point is not to exclude them, on the contrary. I think involving women leads to a situation that is beneficial for all. It creates a bond, there’s a sharing of values. And if men benefit, women should too.”

In another first, there are an equal number of events. There are 239 events, in total, penciled into the calendar for the 2026 Youth Olympics. 11 are mixed team events, while the remaining are equally split into men’s and women’s events. According to Olympics.com, women’s individual and group rhythmic gymnastics events will be gender-restricted. The men’s artistic gymnastics events will see two new additions. Whatever the composition, the event will be a historic one.

Abdou Diallo is no stranger to making history. He was part of the Senegal team that won their first Africa Cup of Nations in 2022. The versatile defender clocked every single minute of action during said tournament. He converted the second penalty in the shootout that the Lions of Teranga won 4-2 after a scoreless game against Egypt. Abdou Diallo’s teammate and captain Sadio Mane, who converted the winning penalty, is an inspiration to many on and off the pitch.

Following that success and for a few other reasons, Diallo believes Senegal’s future is secure in his sport. He views this as a golden opportunity for other avenues to flourish and grow. It remains to be seen how successful this flagship venture proves to be. Will it capture the imagination in the same way as the 2010 FIFA World Cup? Only time will tell.
