Santa Cruz Sentinel also shared the news on their Twitter handle with the caption “Former Watsonville teacher pens first two surfing novels.” and covered his full story. With a background as a creative writing teacher at Pajaro Valley High School and previous experience working at an ad agency in San Francisco, Lucas has always possessed a flair for storytelling. However, his writing aspirations truly took flight when his students posed a thought-provoking question: “Have you ever written a book?” This simple inquiry planted a seed that would later blossom into a literary journey combining his two passions.

Lucas’s path to becoming a celebrated writer in the surfing community took an unexpected turn when he began working for a surfer magazine. It was here that he introduced a new section called “Surf Stories,” featuring the popular segment “Photos from the Readers.” This innovative addition garnered attention, leaving readers hungry for more tales of adventure and inspiration. Overhearing conversations about these stories from some people during a flight further ignited Lucas’s creative fire, leading him to embark on a remarkable undertaking—the Nick Bridgers Stories trilogy.

The Nick Bridgers Stories: Unveiling the World of Surfing

Initially, Lucas had no intention of writing a trilogy. However, his first book, aptly titled ‘Mountains to the East,’ grew into an extensive work spanning over 850 pages. One of his students helped him with the editing of the book and shared his reviews on his teacher’s book which Lucas narrated as “That was a breath of fresh air where the student’s teaching the teacher.” Recognizing the challenges of publishing such a lengthy novel without sacrificing its authenticity and the real touch of the story, Lucas made the difficult decision to divide the story into two parts.
