Environmental advocate Kelly Slater passionately works towards sustainable living. The legend possesses great interest in ocean conservation and making people aware of how they can perform their bit to protect the water bodies around the world. Recently, Slater highlighted the chilling story of an uninhabited island in Indonesia, riddled with plastic pollution.

Plastic Pollution is the accumulation of plastic waste that adversely affects the planet, affecting the habitat of humans and wildlife. Every year the Indonesian islands release 7.8 million tons of plastic waste. Surely, the issue is alarming as it is slowly capturing even the uninhabited islands of the region.

Kelly Slater reshares a saddening story of a plastic-polluted island

The Instagram reels reshared by Slater indicate the pressing plastic pollution issue, slowly inhabiting small islands in the oceans. Despite being a zero-population island in Indonesia, it was filled with piles of plastic and non-biodegradable wastes. The video also added a caption that read, “There are no more islands without signs of plastic pollution 😰”.

Indeed, it is quite saddening to learn about the irregulated process of dumping waste, that slowly piles up on beautiful islands amidst the ocean. In return, these plastic-polluted islands are causing unimaginable harm to the planet.

According to one of Slater’s interviews, plastic pollution is an irreversible issue and humans are sadly exhausting the water bodies with physical and chemical pollution. Hence, whenever he sees upsetting stories of water bodies, he urges people to do their bit to protect the environment.

Growing up near the ocean, Slater has a deep respect for water bodies as he considers them “natural extensions” of himself. The 11-time World Champion’s concern for environmental protection reflects in his conscious business choices. Slater began his journey with his surf clothing line, Outerknown. The brand creates sustainable marine clothes and surfboards as well.

One of Kelly’s latest sustainable endeavors is Kelly Slater Surf Ranch which is a long-term effort to create artificial waves in giant pools. He is also the founder of The Kelly Slater Foundation. The enterprise is dedicated to raising funds for social and environmentally-conscious charities.
