Formula 1 racer Daniel Ricciardo is currently enjoying his time away from the sport. A few months ago, the winner of eight Grand Prix competitions parted ways with McLaren. This led Ricciardo to end up only as a reserve driver for Red Bull. However, the racer is eyeing a full-time position in 2024. As Riccardo is set to appear with the beverage brand at the 2023 Australian Grand Prix, he took some time off to catch up with a friend and Aussie surfer, Mike Fanning.

Recently, Red Bull’s official YouTube page shared a fun catch-up session with Mike Fanning and Daniel Ricciardo. While hanging around with the three-time world champion surfer, he displayed his surfing expertise by guiding him while Fanning showed his surfing antics.

After his practice session as the third driver with Oracle Red Bull Racing, the racer went to catch up with his Aussie mate, Mike Fanning. The racer got in a car with the surfer and they both took off to URBNSURF, an artificial surfing destination in Melbourne.

As soon as they reached the surfing spot, the racer was absolutely shocked to see the surfing spectacles of that place. Fanning offered some delicious meals to the racer. Next, when one of the chefs asked the racer to surf, he exclaimed, “looking at that water I’m like shivering.”

Moreover, later on, when Fanning encouraged him to surf with him, Ricciardo told him, “I’m gonna be a hype man you know I don’t do cold water .” So while watching Fanning’s outstanding surfing skills, the racer stood outside of the pool and cheered for the surfer. He instructed Fanning, “let’s go turn left and left again” Throughout Fanning’s surfing spree, Ricciardo kept hyping his surfing mate.

Besides sharing a fun day, the two athletes also shared about their career breaks and shortcomings.

Earlier in the video, while driving, Fanning asked Ricciardo about his racing journey. To this, the racer revealed, “I think even just having time to myself or like downtime just kind of touching on things that let’s say got me to the dance.”

Agreeing with Ricciardo’s point on taking time off from the sport, Fanning expressed his situation too. He revealed, “I took half a year off in 2016. Just have some time off and try and refill the fun tank which was really nice got to do refill the fun tank.”

In 2016, Fanning experienced a series of emotional turmoil. His elder brother’s death and the heartbreak of a marriage breakup shattered the surfer to great lengths. Hence, he took some time off for himself.

As both took a break at different points in their careers, they happened to connect really well. While Fanning rediscovered his love for surfing, Ricciardo’s fans expect him to make a strong return next year.
