Surfing became popular when social media was not a household thing. It introduced various legendary surfers in the industry like Mick Fanning, Mark Richards, and many others. Moreover, in those days surfers had really restricted money-making resources.
In Rothman’s podcast, he revealed that previously surfers would depend on surfing companies. Brands would get attracted to those surfers who would perform well or do crazy surfing styles. They would immediately sign them up for endorsing their brands. Surfers would wear the company’s t-shirts or appear in their magazines. That’s how they would get money.
