Surfing sports has recently seen a new wave of popularity. Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic, the sport has witnessed an increase in women’s and children’s participation as well. This created new sociological changes as women and children were pushing their limits to perform stunning stunts in the waves. The surfing academy in Southern California has now come up with a plan to use this potential.

The North County surfing academy in Southern California is organizing a family surfing session to teach children and women surfing techniques. The academy has played a major role in boosting the confidence of amateur surfers. However, certain families want to push their child’s morale. Surfing was always considered a manly sport and has seen the dominance of male surfers over the waves. But Californian families are breaking this taboo. 

A 14-year-old girl is riding one of the biggest waves in California

Nicole Peterson has been associated with surfing for a long time now. She also pushes her two young daughters, who are 16 and 14, to practice and learn surfing techniques on regular basis. She stated that her daughters weren’t afraid of the big waves and take them as a challenge.  In an interview with National Geographic, Peterson said, “It doesn’t matter how big the waves are, she’ll put on her flippers and paddle out with all of the surfers or put on snorkel and mask and look for fish”.

Peterson also emphasized the importance of consistency. She revealed that her kids didn’t know anything about surfing when they started taking lessons. However, regularity and dedication made them confident enough to challenge any wave that comes their way. She said, “None of us knew how to surf when we started going down there,”

The rising popularity of surfing in south California

Surfing witnessed an exponential surge during the pandemic. The number of people who picked up longboards and signed up for lessons rose drastically within a few years. Many of these new surfers are kids or teenagers.

The beaches of  Southern California became an ideal place for families to learn to surf year-round. The sandy breaks, beachside parks, and tide pools for children’s exploration made a family attraction.  Consistent waves of water are the biggest contributor to the emergence of this place as a surfing hotspot.

The presence of a growing number of young surfers mastering the waves serves as inspiration for newcomers. However, it would be interesting to see whether the place will create the champions of the upcoming generation.
