Now Hooked Onto It for 18 Years, Rob Lowe Waited 40 Years to Take On Malibu’s Gnarly Waves

Undoubtedly, surfing is one of the most challenging sports to master. People take years to get the hang of it. One such surfing lover is the six-time Golden Globes nominee, actor Rob Lowe. The 58-year-old has taken the internet by storm many times with his alluring surfing photos at the beach. However, it was not until his 40s that Lowe mastered the art of taking on Malibu’s gnarly waves.

On many occasions, the actor has expressed his immense love for surfing. His journey as a surfing lover required him to be patient for 18 years to learn the sport. In a recent interview, the ‘Youngblood’ actor shared how much he improved as a surfer.

Growing up, Rob Lowe never gathered the courage to face the engulfing waves at Malibu. In an interview with The Strategist, Rob shared that he grew up in Malibu as a teenager, but never learned to surf. The high-rising waves were too much for Lowe to experience.

He recalled those days and said, “I’ve been surfing for about 18 years now. It’s funny, I grew up in Malibu as a teenager, but never learned to surf because the waves were so gnarly, they would beat the crap out of you if you went out and tried to learn as a kid. So it took me until my 40s to learn.”.

However, as Rob grew up, he developed the skills and the courage to surf. It was not until his 40s that he mastered surfing. Talking about his love for surfing, Rob revealed that he has had a surfing board with him for the longest time, which he gets remade every time it breaks. He takes it to a particular repair shop in Santa Barbara known as A-Frame that fixes it effortlessly. His board is just perfect for him. Neither is it short nor long. He can also paddle with it without any trouble.

Moreover, as Lowe has mastered surfing the gnarly waves, he shared that next week he will be visiting one of the most amazing surfing spots, that is, Kelly Slater’s Surf Ranch.

Kelly Slater has always aimed to build sustainable surfing experiences for surfing lovers. Therefore, his company Kelly Slater Wave Co. created Kelly Slater’s Surf Ranch. It is an immersive surf lifestyle experience situated in Central California, which is 100 miles inland from the ocean.

It produces the longest high-performance and human-made waves in the world. In the summer, it remains open from May through November, costing $US85000. Moreover, their waves are the only wave system to earn the WSL Certified designation. It indicates that the waves are fit for the WSL elite competition.
