“Say, You Haven’t Done It Yet”: Rick Rubin, Known for Changing Musicians’ Lives, Got Saved From Personal Demons Through Surfing Icon’s Golden Advise

Rick Rubin, the American record producer, once had a life-changing experience. He never hung around athletes before, and his first experience with one made him see things differently. The athlete is a surfer, and apart from breaking records in surfing, is responsible for changing Rubin’s viewpoint forever.

In an interview with Joe Rogan, Rick Rubin describes how meeting legendary surfer Laird Hamilton changed his life. So, what exactly happened, and how did Hamilton impact his life? Let’s find out.

What was impossible for Rubin was made possible by Hamilton’s training. He was also quite different from any other person that Rubin had met before.

“I started going. I remember when I went the first day he said, ‘okay uh let’s do some push-ups’ and he asked me and I couldn’t do one push up and I said, ‘I can’t do it’ and he’s like no don’t say you can’t do it say you haven’t done it yet,” Rubin said to Joe Rogan in the interview. He took an interest in the surfer and started to hang out with him. He even found Hamilton’s character pretty interesting. Rubin was curious about Hamilton’s worldview and how things worked for him. 

Rubin had no idea about working out, but Hamilton made it pretty easy for him to grasp it. He broke up the exercises into pieces and made Rubin do them bit by bit. While the process was repeatedly followed, Rubin was finally able to do the workout properly, as Hamilton just made it easy for him in his own way. Rubin also mentions going from 0 to 100 push-ups in a short period.

Just working out wasn’t the only change, as Rick Rubin never imagined himself in this position. He always thought that whatever he did was best for him, but his mindset changed after the surfer proved himself.

Rick Rubin was a vegan before meeting the surfing icon, but his diet also changed. His life was completely altered when he placed his life in the hands of Hamilton and simply hoped. In the process, he lost weight and got fit, which was, in his opinion, impossible before meeting the surfer.
