Struggling With Eating Disorder, Carissa Moore Reflects on the Advice She Would Give Her Younger Self

Carissa Moore, five-time world champion stunned the surf world with her retirement announcement in January. Since then, she’s released a new book and surfed her final heat as a full-time competitor during the Lexus Pipe Pro. Coincidentally, this event marked the start of the World Surf League’s 2024 Championship Tour. However, this 31-year-old surfer has secured a spot in the upcoming Olympics in Tahiti.

It’s worth noting that Carissa Moore is battling with an eating disorder. As she puts it, “I struggled with binge eating. That also led to, one time, trying to make myself throw up which wasn’t something I’m very proud of. No one should ever think that low of themselves to inflict pain.” Recently, she engaged in an interview with Team USA, delving into discussions about the guidance she imparts to her future self.

In a recent interview on a popular YouTube channel boasting a subscriber count of 251k, she engaged in a thought-provoking dialogue with Arielle Chambers. When she was asked, “What advice would you give to your younger self?”  She responded, “I think the biggest piece of advice I would give my younger self is to have more fun and not stress so much. I mean, even today I try to be perfect but as I said there is no such thing. So, I just don’t compare myself because joy is often stolen when we compare ourselves.”

She further emphasized the significance of staying true to oneself, asserting that each individual is endowed with a distinct and remarkable purpose. By eschewing comparisons and focusing on personal growth, one can aspire to embody the finest rendition of themselves every day. Yet, as she prepares to depart from surfing following the Paris 2024 event, her reason for doing so is undeniably inspiring.

From Olympic pursuit to family planning

Moore will take a break from competitive surfing after her quest for another Olympic gold medal this summer. Her decision stems from a desire to start a family, a plan she has been contemplating for over a year. Moore expressed her feelings on social media, stating, “The last few years, it’s been harder to find the motivation to keep competing with the same intensity.”

She added, “Unfortunately, the reality is, the wins are fleeting and the feelings with it only temporary. I’m not gonna keep doing it for the empty win, there has to be more to it. How many more titles do I really need?” Moore’s agent has confirmed that she is keeping the possibility open to make a comeback to competitive surfing in the coming years, even as a mother, with her sights potentially set on competing in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
