The 12-year-old Kiki Takako Oshiro-Kaneshiro’s competitive spirit has pushed her to emerge as a national sensation, making surfing her own league. Though, from her command over the surfboard, she sure seems a rather trained newbie.

Another Hawaiian surfer befriends the waves

Being the world’s most photographed waves spot, the island of Oahu also boasts renowned surf breaks. Home to the renowned brand Local Motion, which hosts its Surf Into Summer contest every June. The historically significant amateur surfing contest on Oahu welcomes surfers from age 7 to 70 years. Kiki Oshiro-Kaneshiro garnered attention this year for competing as the event’s youngest surfer.

The 12-year-old turned up for Wednesday’s professional competition as the female wild card pro entry. Her feats include a weekend surfing qualification in the under 19 category, ‘Girls Shortboard’ division and the state Championship as reported KHNL.

There is nothing keeping young Kiki away from her surfboard, and her Instagram is a solid proof. In her handle @kikitakako76 she often shares videos and pictures of her routine exercises by the beach.

A staunch surfing career

The 12-year-old surfer has been honing her skills for a while, as evidenced by her Instagram feed allowing her to spread her roots in the surfing world. Kiki actively collaborates in the surfing community business. One such brand engagement is mentioned on her Instagram bio. Interestingly, along with being a stauch surfer at such a young age, she also is the brand ambassador of Hau Bush Board Co. The brand produces handcrafts skateboards from reclaimed timber using design cues from the traditional Hawaiian Alaia shape.

Other participation involvement includes big names like @localmotionhawaii, where Kiki is a team rider and frequently attends brand events. Her progress as a training surfer can be seen as she builds her foundation one wave at a time, or rather, every day. As stated in her Instagram bio, Kiki now collaborates with @tokorosurfboards, a surfboard producer, as a stroked rider. Despite where her accomplishments may have brought her, she still falls just short of the teen age, embodying the adage “Age is just a number.”
