

The village of Teahupo’o is currently experiencing its highest rainfall in the last 20 years. On Monday, the pleasant weather of the floodplain region was replaced by a code-red wave alert due to the low-pressure system off the southwest of Tahiti. Moreover, the collected rainfall in the Teahupo’o Valley has overflowed into the village, bursting the water banks. The large-scale destruction of one of the world’s most renowned surf spots has also raised concerns in the surfing community. Recently, two-time world champion, John John Florence shared heart-wrenching updates of the village with a heartfelt request.
Yesterday, surfer John John Florence shared a couple of Instagram posts of the horrifying, flooded scenarios in the village. To help the region recover from the catastrophic rainfall, the 30-year-old made a noble gesture.

One of the most dominant pipeline surfers of this era, Florence shared two Instagram posts yesterday. In the first video, captioned, “Code storm mode here in Tahiti crazy amount of rain and flooding” the surfer recorded a video of the staggering rainfall from his car. It showed the roads in Teahupo’o waterlogged due to the flood. Moreover, the violent storms had unrooted trees and destroyed houses and shops in the village. People in the video were seen working in their raincoats.

Moreover, according to a report by Swellnet, “Nine cars ended up in the sea, as did innumerable household items gathered by the cascading waters.” For years, Teahupo’o has served as the home to the world’s biggest surfing events. Although, it’s a small remote village, the features of its coastal line are perfect for surfers.

Teahupo’o to hold a highly reputed surfing championship
Surfing will make its debut in the Olympic arena in 2024. Surprisingly, the host for this massive event will be Teahupo’o. It is believed by surfing champion Vaimiti Teiefitu that it could be a golden opportunity to globally showcase the island and its local culture.
