Very few sportsmen have held the Numero Uno status in their sports the way Michael Phelps did in swimming. Throughout all disciplines of swimming, Phelps has achieved unbound glory that includes his 23 Olympic Gold Medals. While Michael Phelps still has certain ‘unreal’ achievements to his name, several of his records are being broken by relatively younger kids of the modern-day age.

Michael Phelps had an ambitious 39 records to his name before he retired. Surprisingly, only a few still remain attached to his name. With teenager Maximus Williamson most recently breaking Phelps’s record in the 400m individual medley, it seems that he is losing it all. In such situations, a pertinent question to ask is: How many of Phelps’s records still remain intact? Let’s find out these answers.

One of the big events to come out of the World Championships in 2019 was when American swimmer Caeleb Dressel dominated the news. He had just completed the 100m race in 49.50 seconds. But in doing so, he went past the Baltimore Bullet’s long-standing record of 49.82 seconds which, when compared, is a minimal but significant 0.32 seconds ahead.

Even though Phelps still holds the record for 200m butterfly and 400m IM for the NAG (National Age Group) of 13-14, the same is not true for the other groups. In fact, having very recently lost out on the 400m IM for NAG 15-16 to Maximus Williamson, Phelps’s previous comment to New York Times in 2019 is worth revisiting.

After Failing “Last Year,” 16-Year-Old High Schooler Finally Shattered Michael Phelps’ Two-Decade Long-Standing Record

He said to the NYT, “I swear to God, if my 400 I.M. record gets broken, I’ll meet you in Colorado Springs for training”. Well with Maximus Williamson’s recent exploits, it must have been a tough pill to swallow for Phelps. Williamson, on the other hand, had this to say after breaking Phelps’ record, “I knew Michael Phelps’ NAG coming into it, cause I was so close to it last year”. Williamson achieved the record in 3:39:83 beating Phelps by a good 2.5 seconds who was at 3:42:08.

Phelps still holds the record for the 200m Butterfly in NAG 15-16 and all 4 records in NAG 17-18 – 100m Butterfly, 200m IM, 400m IM, and 200m freestyle. In the NYT article, Phelps also mentioned, “It’s just crazy because Butterfly was the one stroke that meant the most to me, right? To have them both be gone in the same week was not what I was expecting, by any means”. Hungarian swimmer Kristof Milak broke Phelps’ 200m world record in 1:50:73.

Phelps ended that segment by saying, “It’s just frustrating that records didn’t last longer, but I love being able to see kids breaking through”.Michael Phelps might be losing out on most of his records one by one, but his overall legacy and contribution to swimming remain unmatched to date.
