Leon Marchand, the winner of the Men’s 400-yard event, clocked a time of 3:32.12. However, the returning Cal-swimmer managed to bag all eyes to himself with his unexpectedly dominant performance. Braden Keith, the co-founder of SwimSwam.com shared on his X account posting, “Liam Bell stopped swimming in summer 2023. He spent the whole summer in the weight room instead. And now he’s the fastest 100 yard breaststroker in history. 2023 ➡️ 2024”. The performance given by the Bell hit the wall in a stunning final time of 49.53, taking 0.16 seconds off Finnerty’s record from the 2018 NCAAs. Liam Bell just got out of the shadows with a record-breaking 49.53 swim! With this dominant 100 breast performance, he bagged his first ever NCAA title.

The swimmer was on a hiatus due to an injury where he had a bad groin pull prior to 2021. He swam to help the team despite being injured, but it worsened the injury. His free and breast times were way slower, and this resulted in pulling-himself back from the sport. The record-shattering swimmer began at the prelims, where he clocked a 50.52, resulting in a pool record. He swam fast and nearly went off his career-best by a full second, which was a 50.50 at the NCAA Championships in 2022. In addition to the NCAA Record, Bell is now the American Record, US Open Record, IUPUI Natatorium pool record, and Cal program record holder.

With the performance, Liam Bell has broken a record untouched since 2018. Bell has contributed significantly to the team’s success in collegiate competitions. Before today, his 2022 personal best was the 16th-fastest performance in NCAA history. Now he stands at the top, signifying a major leap forward.

Later that evening, he participated in the breaststroke leg of the Golden Bear’s 400 medley relay, grabbing second place with a program record of 2:58.30. Bell will soon compete in the 200 breast, where he is the 32nd seed. Now that he is back in better-than-ever form, the swimming world is speculating on the future that lies ahead of him.
