Jackie Merrell, a 54-year-old resident of Ellijay, was swimming near the falls at Little River when he went under around 9:45 a.m., according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

Witnesses told authorities that Merrell was swimming to his dog when he disappeared underwater. Reports indicate that his beloved dog was in need of assistance. The official cause of death has not been released yet by authorities.

Merrell found himself in a dire situation as he watched his canine companion struggle in the water. When Jackie selflessly swam toward his canine friend, tragedy struck.
