Double delight for USA at Doha Worlds

After a sensational performance in the Semi-finals, American swimmer Hunter Armstrong raced towards the ultimate gold today at the 100-m backstroke finals while also bettering his timing. He delivered a breathtaking swim in 52.68 seconds to win his maiden World gold in the mentioned category after settling with silver in 2022. The 23-year-old was followed by Hugo Gonzalez of Spain for silver with a timing of 52.70. Greek swimmer Apostolos Christou won a bronze medal timing 53.36 seconds. Jack Atkins, on the other hand, finished in the same position.

While Hunter bettered his semis timing, Jack was slower in the finals and finished 8th in 54.50 seconds as the former continued to establish his authority in international arenas. During the 2022 World Aquatic Championships, he won gold medals in the 4×100 meter freestyle relay and 4x100m mixed relay while taking two silvers and a bronze home in 50-m backstroke, 4x100m medley relay and 100m backstroke, respectively. As he lifted his maiden World backstroke title, it also marked an epoch-defining moment in U.S. swimming.

Hunter Armstrong and Claire Curzan create history

Before Hunter struck gold, it was the 19-year-old Claire Curzan who brought yellowish glory to America. She dominated the 100-meter backstroke finals and threw down 58.29 seconds to win the gold with the runner-up being almost a second slower. It marked her first gold in the World Championships, but when Hunter repeated the masterclass in the men’s contest, albeit with a lower winning margin, it marked a historic moment for us.
