“God Rest His Gentle Soul”: Swimming World Rocked as Man in His 20s Suffers Tragic Fate in an Accident Involving Several People

On Friday, a man in his early 20s lost his life while swimming at a beach in Waterford. The group of five reportedly faced difficulty in swimming while being over a hundred meters away from the shore. Authorities had first responded to the emergency call at around 1.25 pm. Soon after the Irish Coast Guard rescue helicopter 117 was dispatched. The now-deceased was reportedly airlifted and taken to Cork University Hospital. However, he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Youghal RNLI, Ardmore, and Youghal coastguard units conducted the rescue operation. Not long after Independent.ie shared the news on Facebook, netizens took to the comments section to pay their respects.

On 28th April 2023, a group of five friends set out for a swim at Whiting Bay in Ardmore. However, merely 150 meters away from the coast, the group encountered difficulty in carrying on. While 2 of the 5 swimmers swam back to the shore unaided, a rescue mission was launched for the other three. After an alarm was raised by the public, around 1:25 pm the Irish Coast Guard requested for the inshore lifeboat to be deployed.

The Coast Guard removed three people from the water. One of these individuals, a man aged in his early 20s, was taken by air ambulance to Cork University Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased,” an RNLI spokesperson said in an interview. “No other injuries have been reported at this time. A file will be prepared for the coroner,” he further added.

No further details of the 21-year-old victim’s identity have been released. Independent.ie reported the news on Facebook with the caption, “A man in his 20s has died after a drowning accident, which saw several people in difficulty in the water.” Soon after netizens have taken to their social media to express their condolences after the unfortunate incident.
