The swimming world has been facing one disaster after the other. Recently, the Aubervilliers aquatic center in Paris, which is to be the venue for the 2024 Olympic swimming events, was destroyed by rioters. Now another prestigious swimming event was ruined by an unforeseen disaster. The World Triathlon Championship is a well-known event in the swimming world. It involves swimmers competing against each other in the open sea. This year the event took place in Sunderland on Roker Beach. However, it had to be canceled after 57 swimmers fell ill at the same time because of an unknown reason.

Around 2000 swimmers had come to Roker Beach to take part in the World Triathlon Championship. The excitement soon turned to horror when 57 swimmers fell sick with diarrhea. The UK Health Security Agency has launched a massive investigation to find out the cause of the sudden outbreak.

Investigation is underway to unravel the cause of the mysterious outbreak

The UKHSA took samples of the excrement and sent them to the laboratories for testing. They were apprehensive of a common pathogen contaminating the water. However, a third-party environment agency had already tested the waters around Roker Beach just three days before the Triathlon.

They found 3,900 E Coli colonies for every 100ml of water, which was 39 times the normal count. One of the major symptoms of an E coli infection is diarrhea. Despite this evidence, the British Triathlon continued with their events putting the swimmers in danger. The agency published the results of the tests after the meet, and also they tested the waters beyond the competition zone.

The British Triathlon had tested the waters, and it had passed the standard requirements. However, as per reports published by the Guardian, “The event was on a stretch of coastline that has been at the centre of a long-running battle over sewage discharges”. There is also a legal battle going on between environmental groups and the local government for lack of supervision. The local governing body has insisted that there has been no sewage discharge on Roker Beach since 2021. This mishap has brought together many swimming enthusiasts who have begun voicing their protests for the immediate resolution of the sewage discharge issue.

Swimming community unites in calls for swift action

Jacob Birtwhistle, a triathlete from Australia, wrote on his social media to express his disappointment regarding the ongoing sewage discharge issue at Roker Beach. He also took ill after the swim and said that the organizers should have canceled the event. Another swimmer complained of feeling nauseated after the tournament. In the midst of this, Bob Latimer, a campaigner, said that the sewage discharge has still not stopped. The Environmental Law Foundation has issued a pre-action letter to the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs asking for a judicial review.

The British Triathlon in Sunderland was part of the qualifying race for the Paris Olympics. Sunderland was hosting this event for the first time this year. But from what happened, this will probably be the last time that Sunderland hosts the British Triathlon.
