Having always been ahead of others with 23 Olympic gold medals out of the total 28, it is evident that he has less to no experience of being left behind. However, there is an exception.

It might come as a surprise that Phelps felt lazy about driving. Although he was keen on getting his license, he lacked the drive to make an effort. Ultimately, he failed the test twice. The swimming legend was mocked by his friends in a fun way for this failure. But, he didn’t give up.

In his book, ‘Beneath the surface’, he recounted his experience with driving. Phelps wrote that his coach Bob would let him practice by driving his car in open parking lots and in places where there weren’t vehicles moving around. He was comfortable with driving. However, that wasn’t enough to obtain a license.

Phelps had to take a written test. He was quite confident to pull it off, as his other tests at school as no big deal. It turned out he failed that test. “They ripped on me pretty hard when they found out I failed the test,” he explained.

Debbie, his mom made a point. He probably failed the test because it was not a paper-pen test. As it was a test on the computer, it meant no scope to rework the entries. Eventually, Phelps reveals that he didn’t read the book. On the other hand, was the mockery he had to handle. “Michael, want to borrow my bike?” “Mike, hire me. I’ll drive you,” they said.

Does Phelps has a driving license?

Phelps realizes that his reading the book was inevitable to pass the written test. He reads the book intensely, passes the test, and gets his learner’s permit. Eventually, he got his license in time for senior year and saved himself from more embarrassment.

“Ah, freedom,” he described his sense of relief. With a net worth of $100 million dollars, Phelps leads a lavish lifestyle. Also, his passion for speed is evident in the cars he owns. A Cadillac Escalade, a Mercedes Benz SL63, and a Range Rover, to name a few.
