On 6th February 2023, Nicole Johnson re-shared a post originally shared by Dr. Vanessa Lapointe. Along with the video, Johnson wrote, “I need to love me, my kids don’t…when I’m in this space my relationship with my boys (and Michael) is pure magic 🥰” What was the original video about that made Johnson write these words?
In the video, Dr. Lapointe spoke about how self-love makes other relationships healthy too. She says parents should not feel entitled to be loved by their children. Often, people feel the “need” to be loved by their children. To receive that love, they try to give them the best things possible and keep them happy.

“What You Getting Me Next?”: Michael Phelps’s Wife Makes an Adorable Request
However, according to Dr. Lapointe, one doesn’t need to be loved by anyone other than themselves. Until and unless one is full and satiated, they’ll just be full of holes that need filling. To fill that, people often expect things from their children like good grades, successful careers, etc. to get the validation that they did their jobs parents well. But according to the doctor, magic happens in the relationship when that added pressure isn’t there.
Agreeing with the message, Johnson repeated that she needs to be the one to love her, not her kids. Furthermore, when she is in that space where she loves herself, it automatically brightens her relationship with her husband and kids. Though now, she loves herself and her kids and tries to be the best parent to them, there was a time when Nicole Johnson was not ready to be a parent.

This isn’t the first time Johnson has agreed with something Dr. Lapointe pointed out. A few weeks ago, in a similar manner, Mrs. Phelps shared yet another story by Dr. Vanessa Lapointe. In this video, the said doctor opened up about how she dealt with her pregnancy.
Despite being an experienced psychologist, Lapointe had no clue what happened. Joining the clueless club, Johnson revealed she, too, did not have an idea about her future or wants while she was expecting her first child.
