When it comes to learning a new skill, having an Olympic-level mentor has its fair share of advantages. Recently, Jennifer Hudson got to experience this firsthand when swimming phenom Ryan Lochte agreed to give her swimming lessons. He holds a stellar record in the sport and comes second only to Michael Phelps. But she isn’t the only American singer that Lochte has taught.

In addition to teaching the ‘Spotlight’ singer, Ryan Lochte can also boast of being a mentor to the Grammy-winning artist John Legend. The singer is famous for his soulful voice and soul-stirring notes, which have captured countless hearts. However, for the swimming legend, all that mattered was his performance in the pool. In retrospect, he declared that out of both his celebrity students, one “out swam” the other.

R&B singer John Legend recruited Ryan Lochte in 2020 while he was getting ready for the 2020 Olympics. The 12-time Olympic medalist joked about the collab, saying, “Not a bad way to start my week. Swimming with [John Legend] giving him some swim tips and getting him ready for 2020 Olympics haha!”. Now, the 39-year-old swimming ace has revealed his accurate estimate of his student’s swimming prowess. Recently, he was invited to The Jennifer Hudson Show by her most recent tutee. The show posted a short clip from the interview on their official Instagram page with the caption, “@iamjhud isn’t the only EGOT @ryanlochte gave swimming lessons to!”

The singer asked him, “OK, but who’s better though?” To that, the swimming sensation replied that Jennifer Hudson was better than the “All of Me” singer without a shadow of a doubt. To continue after that, Ryan Lochte retraced his steps back into memory lane to reveal that John Legend has a tiny pool in the backyard of his home. Even then, he said, Jennifer Hudson “outswam him by a lot”. It can be expected from someone like Legend, who was “afraid to go in the deep end” of his own pool. Aside from the 44-year-old EGOT winner, Ryan Lochte helped a smaller version of himself get over the fear of the water.

Before Ryan Lochte accepted students from elsewhere, he practiced his mentoring skills with one of his closest family members. That was his six-year-old son, Caiden Lochte. During a conversation with Graham Bensinger for a YouTube video, he revealed the family secret. He spoke in great detail about the memorable moments he shared with his son in the pool. The swimming icon even complimented the young prodigy, saying, “he’s so smart and he likes swimming”. Thereafter, Bensinger released the video with the title ‘Ryan Lochte: Teaching my son to swim’.

However, much like John Legend, Caiden, too, needed some time to find his swimming legs. His father said, “One of my proudest moments happened about like two weeks ago he’s learning how to swim…We went to the pool me and him and we both had goggles on and he’s getting used to the pool and everything but he was swimming stroke for stroke with me.” Thus, although it took some time for the boy to gather confidence, his genes prevailed at the end.
