On August 13, a 750-meter swim race took place in Swansea Bay. Passionate swimmers from all around the community took part in the event. However, the race ended with a saddening fate for a 72-year-old swimmer. The swimmer who won this race in 2022 by covering 1,500 meters lost his life during the event.

72-year-old swimmer David Grey was an avid swimmer who has been participating in swimming events since the British lifeguard championship in the 1970s. And this year, Grey, who, despite being in poor health, decided to participate in the event. However, he fell prey to unprecedented circumstances as the 72-year-old ended up losing his life in the process. The swimmer had participated with his daughter Debbie in the race.

72-year-old man dies while participating in a swimming event

On Sunday afternoon, a father died while participating in an open water race event. The 72-year-old swimmer David Grey was competing in the 750-meter race held in the waters of Swansea Bay. According to the organizers of the event, Tri-Sharks witnessed the swimmer slow down while participating in the event. With the help of paramedics, Grey was immediately taken out of the water and taken to a beach, where he lost his life.

According to Wales Online, a spokesperson from the South Wales Police stated, “South Wales Police was called just before 5.15 pm on Sunday, August 13 with a report of a 72-year-old man having got into difficulties in the sea off Mumbles Road, Swansea.” Further, the statement revealed that officers, other emergency services, and the public tried their best to revive Grey but were sadly not able to save the swimmer.

A Welsh ambulance service had also sent one Cymru high-acuity response unit, an advanced paramedic practitioner, and an emergency ambulance to the scene. The emergency medical retrieval team, which had traveled by air, also joined the forces to help Grey. But unfortunately, despite the efforts of emergency services, coastguards, police volunteers and RNLI Grey was not able to survive. Following the incident, event organizer Tri-Sharks, who were inspired by Grey, paid a heartfelt tribute to the swimmer.

Tribute to David Grey

Grey, due to his passion for taking on new swimming challenges, was considered a legend in the swimming community. According to the event organizer, Tri-Sharks, “Dai was a world class swimmer. His passing is a massive loss to swimming and to sport.” After this heartbreaking incident, the 2024 event will be renamed to honor the swimmer. The next year?s event will be known as the Dai Grey Swansea Bay Swim.

According to Grey?s wife, Elaine, his husband suffered from Scleromyxedema, a race-related skin disorder, and a form of Scleromyxedema, Dermato-Nuero syndrome. However, this did not stop the 72-year-old from pursuing his passion, “When he came out of hospital last year, he was back in the water.”

The loss of such a passionate swimmer is a truly heartbreaking loss for the swimming community. Nonetheless, the Tri-Sharks through their honorary tribute, will help the community remembering David Grey?s efforts and zeal towards swimming.
