Matt Richards had to overpower the swimming spearhead Tom Dean in the 200m free final in World Championship Fukuoka 2023 to enter the history book. His record felt glacé when the competitor list showcased David Popovici, the world record holder, satisfied with the fourth position. British Swimming weighs recent performances in curating team

On December 22, British Swimming unfurled the list of swimmers going for the Doha World Championships next season. The main motto of the squad-building remained to taste the water before the big event in the French metropolis in 2024.“We are all aware of the unusual challenge that a World Championships in Olympic year could pose – but our swimmers and staff are preparing for Doha as a crucial part of our build-up to Paris”, the performance director of the authority, Chris Spice claimed. The squad included 20 swimmers. Most of them fancied themselves in the pools of Otopeni or Fukuoka.

Matthew ‘Matt’ Richards featured in the team as a definite choice after winning the LEN Aquatics 200m free. The same fate went with his mixed 4x100m free relay partner, Anna Hopkin. That paid him nicely as Peaty jumped into the squad. Matt Richards discovered, this time, his motivational pair in the LEN Aquatics, Tom Dean and Duncan Scott in the same squad. But the larger revelation made the fans awe in the moments.

The obvious presence of Ben Proud

In the LEN Aquatics in Otopeni, Matt Richards, and Duncan Scott had to throttle the behemoth of Ben Proud to come into the top positions. However, the 2021 WSC champion in 50m free clasps the enigmatic 5th position in the history of 50m free, clocking 20.40. Moreover, Ben Proud’s inclusion in the latest squad earned the enviable 7-time appearance record for the Brit in the World Swimming Championship. However, both Ben Proud and Adam Peaty might miss their partner-in-records, James Guy in the squad. For unknown reasons, Guy missed the berth, even after returning to the path of individual medal victory after 7 years
