The realm of swimming is often filled with twists and turns. As the 2023 Swimming World Cup kicks off in Berlin, a strange incident was witnessed by the fans. The incident unfolded as the likes of Kane Follows, Mitchell Larkin, Christian Diener, and Cornelius Jahn made their way into the pool for the men’s 200m backstroke event.

What should have been a regular race turned into confusion for some fans and social media enthusiasts when they noticed the details of the 200m backstroke lineup. This was mainly due to the race winner showcasing his love for the United States despite not being a US citizen.

The men’s 200m backstroke event at the 2023 Swimming World Cup left fans puzzled. Italian swim sensation Thomas Ceccon secured a first-place finish in a time of 1.56.64 while Ryosuke Irie finished second with 1.58.99 and Australian Joshua Edwards-Smith secured the third spot with 1.59.00. However, it was Ceccon’s swim cap that demanded everybody’s attention.

Despite being an Italian swimmer, race winner Ceccon’s swim cap had the flag of the United States. This created a frenzy in the venue and on social media with an individual also posting the incident on X. The caption of the post read, “Team USA’s newest backstroker Thomas Ceccon wins the Berlin World Cup title in the 200 backstroke with a BLAZING 1:56.64.” This win by the Italian was a huge improvement, as only a few hours earlier, Ceccon had produced a different outcome in the heats.
