The Nevada Sandpipers have been at the forefront of nurturing the swimming prowess of Katie Grimes. The HC of the coaching program had taken a few moments to acknowledge that extraordinary factor when the swimmer was just 12 years old. Since then, there have not been many moments when the phenomenal open-water swimmer faced a scarcity of commendations for her achievements. Her achievements spoke volumes at the year’s best awards, and her latest nomination was a testament to her success beyond the pool.
The latest names in selecting the best in open water swimming
On January 27, the IG handle of World Aquatics posted nominations for “Male and Female #OpenWater Athlete Of The Year 2023“. The name of Katie Grimes from that emphatic crowd lit up the occasion as the teenager arguably had her best endeavor ever in the last season. Last year, Fukuoka shared the budding ground of the former Junior World champion. In the 400m medley part, she had claimed the silver medal. Moreover, in her 10k open water challenge, the Nevada native claimed the bronze medal, ultimately becoming the first American to claim the Paris Olympics berth.

In the list of opponents, Katie Grimes found Sharon Van Rouwendaal who had defeated her in the 10k Open water challenge in the 2022 World Aquatics Championship. Leonie Beck had her share of success in both 5k and 10k open water swimming events in Fukuoka, claiming gold in both events. On the other hand, Chelsea Gubecka grabbed success in the 10k event with the silver medal. But for Katie Grimes, the latest nomination is not the only one she received for last year’s performance.

The other nomination
In the 10k event of Fukuoka last year, Katie Grimes had to face a stiff challenge as the contention list was full of legends. Sharon Van Rouwendaal, Leonie Beck, and Ana Marcela Cunha made the ultimate choice to earn the medals. But in reality, a photo finish earned her bronze, leaving behind Rouwendaal and Cunha. Eventually, the achievement bestowed her with the Female Race of The Year title in the Golden Goggle last year.
