The Athens leg of the Swimming World Cup 2023 is officially over. Just like in Berlin, swimmers did not disappoint the fans in Athens, which saw a number of World Cup records being broken and athletes walking away with handsome prize money. Both Michael Andrew and Kaylee McKowen have been shining constantly throughout the tournament as the competition now heads to its final leg in Budapest.

At the end of the action in Athens, Australia’s Kaylee McKowen led the women’s individual rankings with a total of 117.7 points while USA’s Michael Andrew is currently ranked fourth on the men’s table, with a total of 108.4 points.

After two legs of the competition, Kaylee McKowen has earned a total of US$24,000 while Michael Andrew has secured US$12,000 so far. So far at the World Cup, McKowen has raced nine times and has achieved seven gold medals in the process. In this World Cup alone, the Australian has set six new World Cup records in the women’s 200m backstroke (2:06.02), 100m backstroke (57.63), 50m backstroke (27.02), 200m backstroke in Berlin (2.06.47), 100m backstroke in Berlin (57.95) and 50m backstroke in Berlin (27.24)

As for Andrew, the American has raced a total of twelve times so far in the ongoing competition. Although Andrew has not smashed any existing World Cup records so far, he does have four gold medals to his name in the men’s 50m backstroke in both Berlin (24.47) and Athens (24.79), 50m freestyle (21.96) and 100 butterfly (51.66). Apart from these two impressive swimmers, a host of other athletes also stole the show at the Swimming World Cup 2023.

Haiyang Qin and Siobhan Bernadette Haughey also steal the show

Apart from the performances of Kaylee McKeown and Michael Andrew, swimmers like Haiyang Qin and Siobhan Bernadette Haughey have also impressed fans. Qin currently leads the men’s individual ranking with a total of 116.7 points and he has also secured a prize money total of US$24,000 so far. On top of that, he also set three new meet records in the Berlin finals with top performances in the men’s 200m breaststroke (2:07.45), 50m breaststroke (26.29), and men’s 100m breaststroke (57.69). While Haughey is currently placed third in the women’s ranking, with a total of 109.9 points and US$16,000 to her name.

She also set a new meet record in the women’s 200m freestyle with a time of 1:55.03 and another in the 100m freestyle with a time of 52.02 seconds. As for Kaylee McKeown and Michael Andrew, both swimmers will now shift their focus to Budapest, as the tournament comes to an end next week in Hungary’s capital.
