2023 has been a highlight year for American swimming sensation Katie Ledecky. With her win at the 800m freestyle event at the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, she surpassed Michael Phelps for the most individual golds in the worlds. The 2023 US Open also added to the glory. She finished the event with her unstained winning record in the 800m and 1500m freestyle events. With this, Ledecky proudly steps into the Olympic year 2024.

And with just 5 days into that, an Olympic statistic has come up. The numbers succinctly show the legacy Katie Ledecky has set starting from her first Olympic Games in 2012. Side by side, it also gives way to another possibility in the Parisian arena.

Katie Ledecky’s golden run at the Olympic Games

The Swimming Stats recently took to its X and shared a list of the most decorated female swimmers at the Olympics in individual events. Katie Ledecky is seen leading this list with seven total medals. Six of those are gold. The caption to this carried, “These are the most decorated female swimmers in Olympic history in individual events. Katie Ledecky tops the list and she can win more medals in Paris”. Interestingly, Ledecky’s medal haul in Paris can bring her closer to another swimming phenom.

With seven total medals, if Ledecky wins only three golds in individual events in Paris, that will take her total Olympic individual medal tally to 10. This will take her to second place after Michael Phelps in the all-time history of swimming. Phelps stands tall with 23 medals. One more interesting fact comes forward with the fresh statistic.

Apart from Ledecky, other swimmers on the list are no longer competing in the swimming arena. In the second position is Kristina Egerszegi from Hungary with 5 golds, 1 silver, and 1 bronze. In the third position stands Inge De Bruijn, a Dutch swimmer with six medals in total. She has 4 golds, 1 silver, and 1 bronze. They all have retired much before. This seems to be further cementing Ledecky’s position as an Olympic legend. Her performances on the Olympic stage are also a testament to that.

The Olympic wins of the 800m phenom

Katie Ledecky’s rise started with the 2012 Olympic Games in London. That year, Ledecky clinched gold in the 800-meter freestyle by making a national record. She clocked a time of 8:14.63. The run continued in Rio as well.

She won three golds in 200m freestyle with a time of 1:53.73, another in 400m freestyle with a world record of 3:56.46, and the third in 800m freestyle again with a world record of 8:04.79. The 2020 Summer Olympic Games was no different.
