Michael Phelps became a household name when he got hold of the most Olympic medals. The Flying Fish, who has won 28 Olympic awards, lives a fulfilling life alongside his wife, Nicole Johnson.

Nicole Johnson is no less than a celebrity herself. She won the Miss California pageant in 2010 and competed for Miss USA. Phelps and Johnson got married in 2016 and have three children. Johnson once opened up about Phelps’ mental health struggles.

Nicole thought she could be the therapist Phelps needed

Michael Phelps had his share of peaks and valleys in his personal and professional life. All that he went through made him what he is today, but it also had a toll on his mental health. Phelps faced depression and anxiety issues, for which he sought professional help.

Johnson said, “I used to think, ‘Oh, I can fix him. I can be his therapist. I can be what he needs,’”. She soon realized she could not take ownership of her husband’s feelings. Nicole said, “But what I’ve learned is that you can’t take ownership for how they’re feeling, no matter how badly you want to“.

Michael Phelps retired from swimming in 2016. Since then, Phelps has been transparent about his mental health issues and advocated for mental health awareness.

Phelps opened up about another incident that made him question his life in 2014. Phelps revealed how gloomy and lost he felt during the pandemic. Staying at home made him vulnerable to the uncertainties of life and made him feel worthless at times.

In 2014, Phelps was arrested for drunk driving for the second time; he “didn’t want to see another day“. Michael Phelps went into rehab the next month, and his life turned completely.

Phelps now recognizes the value of therapy and never relents in raising awareness of it. The example of Michael Phelps’ life shows how changing your course may fix your life.
