Sha’Carri Richardson spoke directly to her fellow athletes who have become victims of incorrect media representation and unwarranted criticism. In a press conference after the iconic 100m victory at the World Athletics Championships earlier this month, she explained the source of her confidence.

Twitter handle of “Track Spice” uploaded the video with the caption, “Sha’Carri Richardson has a message for people facing adversity”. The video has gone viral and accumulated over 30K views since it was uploaded yesterday.

In the video, she advises the viewers to “always fight”. The Dallas native further emphasized the importance of never allowing others, especially the media, and outsiders, “to define who you are”. Sha’Carri Richardson owed this newfound empowerment to her personal experiences.

Sha’Carri Richardson has faced undue scrutiny from the media throughout her athletic career. This became more intense after her suspension due to doping speculations and subsequent failure to qualify for the World Athletics Championships in 2022.

However, she returned in 2023 for the US Track and Field Outdoor Championships. She looked just the way she did two years earlier, but when Sha’Carri Richardson stepped onto the tracks, she took off her wig and revealed a new look. After winning the national title, she said, “I had to shed the old and present the new”. The athlete took her transformation a step further at the World Athletics Championships, determined to take control of her narrative.

Sha’Carri Richardson proved once and for all that when she said, “I’m not back, I’m better,” she really meant it. In her debut appearance in the 2023 World Athletics Championship against stalwart competitors, including two Jamaican rivals, Richardson left everyone in her dust. She clinched the world title in the 100m event from defending champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.

Richardson went on to add another bronze to her collection in the 200m and a final gold in the 4x100m relay. After the 100m victory, Richardson gave an exclusive interview and asked everyone to “Never give up”. She spoke of the importance of ignoring everyone’s opinions, saying “Never allow media, never allow outsiders, never allow anything”.

Richardson asked the viewers to follow her example and never allow anyone “but yourself and your fate to define who you are”. Finally, she emphasized the importance of challenging the odds, stating “Always fight no matter what fight”.
