For every athlete worldwide, the aim is always to achieve a status among the venerated. While track and field stars rarely have an enduring career, winning titles and awards is still the way to go. And as much as they train hard for their achievements, sometimes unexpected scenarios can take them by surprise. For Welsh track icon Iwan Thomas, one such incident caught him off guard, two years after retirement, which also sealed his place among the elites, albeit with a disconcerting backstory for his American counterpart.

Thomas won a silver medal in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics in the 4x400m relay event and became a national sensation overnight. The Commonwealth title winner retired in 2006, only to gain knowledge of a sudden change in past events, thanks to American sprinter Antonio Pettigrew.

Track and field icon’s bizarre glory moment
While arbitrary events can often impact the course of things, much akin to the butterfly effect, performers are mostly fixated on elevating themselves through dedication and hard work. And it was that hard work that brought Thomas and his teammates the silver medal in Atlanta. However, despite his Olympic success, Thomas never won the top spot at the World Championships, either. And yet, while his professional career ended ten years after his Olympic triumph, he had one more surprise waiting for him. A recent post on Facebook highlighted Thomas’ bizarre career highlighting moment and we’re flummoxed.

Antonio Pettigrew and the American team won the 4x400m relay race in the 1997 Athens World Championships, while the British cohort was placed second. Iwan Thomas carried the burden of losing out to his comrades from across the pond for a long time before Pettigrew set the record straight. In 2003, Pettigrew admitted to using illegal substances between 1997 and 2003 and hence lost out on all his performances, which were subsequently declared as null and void/moot.

As a result, the International Association of Athletic Federations nullified Pettigrew’s achievements during the period, rendering his team’s gold win from 1997 void. This resulted in the British team consisting of Thomas, Roger Black, Mark Richardson, and Jamie Baulch being christened the champions of the world 11 years after the actual race.
