“Get Well Soon”: Days Ahead of Big Showdown, Olympic Gold Medalist Marcell Jacobs Leaves Fans Concerned With Saddening Update

On May 28, 2023, Lamont Marcell Jacobs, the two-time Olympic gold medalist, was slated to compete against Fred Kerley in a 100-meter race at the Diamond League event in Rabat, Morocco. Just two days ahead of the race, Jacobs updated on Twitter about his withdrawal from the race.

Jacobs has previously competed against other athletes in various competitions, including the Olympics and the Diamond League circuit. However, this is not the first time Jacobs has withdrawn from a race against Kerley, and fans were quick to point out. Jacobs has dropped out of competitions against Kerley before.

Digging the Past, Rival Contenders and Race Withdrawals

Fans have often looked forward to the 2x Olympic medalists’ appearances on the field. Marcell Jacobs and Fred Kerley previously made headlines at the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi on May 7, 2022, but Jacobs withdrew because of intestinal problems. At the Prefontaine Classic, they were also supposed to face-off, but Jacobs withdrew because of a muscle injury he sustained at a meet in Italy.

At the 2022 World Athletics Championships, Jacob ran a 10.02 in his opening, but withdrew from the semi-finals because of a thigh injury. Fred Kerley won the gold medal, while Trayvon Bromell and Akani Simbine took home silver and bronze, respectively. This time, the Olympian’s participation got hindered by a slight lumbar-sacral block.

There has always been tension among fans over the rivalry between Marcell Jacobs and Fred Kerley. According to media outlets, the pair might give the sport what it needs. The two sprinters last faced off in the Tokyo Olympics final in 2021.

Mixed Reactions on Pulling Out of the Race

The Italian track and field sprinter received mixed reactions soon after the update. While his supporters have sent their support and best wishes for his recovery.

Some fans even got defensive and recalled Jacobs’ heated encounter with Coleman by 0.003 seconds at the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade in March 2022. Both sprinters were timed at 6.44 seconds in the 60-meter final.

While many showered him with support for his speedy recovery, others were quick to point out his previous withdrawals.

Some cynics even went farther away to point all his previous withdrawals replying to his tweet.

Jacobs also won the gold medal in the men’s 100-meter final at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, breaking Usain Bolt‘s long-standing men’s 100m world record.

Since finishing second in the men’s 60-meter final at the European Indoor Championships in March, Jacobs has not participated in any of the races. However, after his withdrawal from Rabat’s Diamond league, it seems that fans have to wait a little longer to witness Jacobs on the tracks once again, don’t you agree?
