US Legend’s Concern over the 2023 Diamond League’s Viewership

Often referred to as “superman”, Michael Duane Johnson, with his accumulation of four Olympic wins and eight world titles, holds an esteemed place among the finest sprinters in track and field history. Fans worldwide praised this legend for his unwavering determination and achievements. But Michael was disappointed in the viewership of the Diamond League 2023 after SPORTSmediaWatch revealed a report detailing the viewership for respective sports including NASCAR, WNBA, MLB, and Prefontaine Classic. The report said the viewership of the Prefontaine Classic in 2023 increased in comparison to last year.

SPORTSmediaWatch claimed that “Coverage of track & field’s Prefontaine Classic, which this year doubled as the final of the Diamond League, averaged a 0.47 rating and 744,000 viewers on NBC last Saturday and a 0.49 and 765,000 on Sunday — down from last year when the network’s lone window averaged a 0.6 and 977,000 over Memorial Day weekend.” But even though the viewership peaked, the US legend did not seem happy with the overall number of audience. Expressing his utmost concern and despair, on Saturday he wrote on Twitter, “Fair to expect the DL final should draw significantly more viewers over both days. Was a great meet so what’s the problem?”

Fans’ Fiery Response to Michael’s Comment

The Diamond League is a tour of track and field events with some best athletes around the world where they display their talent and skills. So, according to Michael Johnson, people should show more respect for track and field and watch it to support the athletes associated with this sport. But while Michael Johnson raised his concern and questioned people’s love for the track and field, some fans did sit back and answered him in the comment section.

For instance, a user said, “They held a track meet the exact same time as college football and the NFL, you’re gonna lose that battle 10 out of 10 times”. While another Twitter holder commented this happened because of a lack of promotion, “There was very little promotion of the meet on Television. If I was not a Track fan and past competitor I would have had no idea it was happening or televised. There is a great lack of promotion for T & F in the US altogether. Most of my friends have no knowledge of T&F.”

Some of the enthusiasts believed that it did gain expected viewership because of the football season, “Competing with football,” and “Competed against football, which isn’t an issue in May.” Another person answering Michael’s question wrote that one is giving attention as this was being organized at the end of the year, “After worlds – For some reason, it felt too late in the year.”

In conclusion, the discussion around the viewership in 2023’s Diamond League brought attention to the fact that even iconic personalities in sports should acknowledge their beloved sports’ evolving nature. To maintain interest at peak levels and garner the attention of more audiences, sporting events like the Prefontaine Classic should be careful about audience behaviors and preferences. So what do you think will help the league get more viewership? Will the authorities think about innovative strategies? or, should it be scheduled at a different time in a year?
