Middle-distance runner Whittni Orton Morgan expressed her gratitude for making it to the US Olympic Trials. The track and field athlete underwent knee surgery on November 20th, 2023. However, her impressive 5th place 5000m finish after returning from surgery wasn’t enough to qualify for the Olympics. “I wish I could have had a little more in me,” Morgan wrote on July 2nd.

“I gave this race all I had and am grateful to leave with no regrets,” added the athlete. However, unbeknownst to Whittni Orton Morgan, a chain of events would revive her Paris Olympic dreams. On July 7th, news broke that the middle-distance runner would indeed get the opportunity to represent her nation on the grandest stage of them all.

Citius Mag confirmed Whittni Orton Morgan’s lucky break in a report. Her two fellow track and field athletes made decisions after qualifying for the Olympics that impacted Morgan’s career trajectory. Elle St. Pierre took the top spot in the 5000m finals during the Olympic trials. However, head coach Mark Coogan was more excited about her third-place finish in the 1500m.

Despite finishing third behind Nikki Hiltz and Emily Mackay, Elle St. Pierre achieved a personal best time of 3:55.99. So, the Team New Balance Boston head coach decided that St. Pierre should focus on the 1500m in Paris. This freed up one spot in the 5000m, but it still wasn’t enough for Morgan to qualify. It would take a similar decision from Parker Valby to make the difference.

Parker Valby finished fourth in the 5000m race at the US Trials, ahead of Whittni Orton Morgan. However, she achieved a better result in the 10,000m event, placing second. As a result, Valby had the option to compete in both the 10,000m and 5000m races in Paris. Following in St. Pierre’s path, Valby chose to focus on one event, deciding against competing in the 5000m race in Paris.

With both Elle St. Pierre and Parker Valby opting out of contention for the 5000m title, Whittni Orton Morgan got her chance. Interestingly, Morgan hasn’t met the Olympic standard but qualifies for the event thanks to the World Rankings quota. Morgan’s coach posted her emotional reaction upon learning the news.

Whittni Orton Morgan couldn’t believe her ears

Brigham Young University Women’s Cross Country & Distance Coach Diljeet Dosanjh Taylor personally conveyed the incredible news. Taylor filmed and posted the wholesome conversation where she FaceTimed Morgan in the guise of checking on her morning workout. “How was the workout?” Taylor asked her athlete. The middle-distance runner said “It was good,” but also “kind of hard.”

However, the coach’s following statement stopped Whittni Orton Morgan in her tracks. “How’s your French?” the BYU coach asked. “My French?” asked Morgan before the realization hit her. “Are you serious? Shut up! Oh my gosh!” muttered the athlete in glee. “You are an Olympian!” replied Taylor as Morgan asked if her coach was “serious”, yet again, in disbelief.

After battling knee surgery, Whittni Orton Morgan found it hard to believe that she even made it to the top five at the US Team Trails. Learning that she had made it to the Olympics must have been a shock of a lifetime.
