Gabby Thomas stands on the verge of track and field immortality. If last month’s Olympic Team Trials were any indication of what’s to come, the USA’s fans can rest assured that Thomas will be bringing home gold in at least one event from the upcoming Paris Olympics. But it wasn’t a smooth sail for the University of Texas star.

In a YouTube video uploaded by ESPN yesterday, Thomas could be heard talking about how she’s moved mountains to get her name on the team to represent the Stars and Stripes on the grandest stage for a second time. Referring to her injury from 2022, Thomas reiterated how she had previously managed to rise above the challenge, and claimed that a similar situation may wait at the French capital as well.

…it’s been a lot of hard work. I’ve come back from injuries and setbacks and so I’ve really grown I feel really ready to accomplish my goals this year,” said Gabby as the interviewer asked her about what she envisions for herself in order to turn her bronze medal from Tokyo into a gold at the European city. If she does manage to haul gold, Thomas will be remembered in the same leagues as the iconic Florence Griffith-Joyner and Allyson Felix.

Just before the Team Trials, Gabby made her fans aware of her decision to pull out from the 400m event to focus solely on the 200m race. While many fans clamored about her choice, it seems like it was a well-calculated move. Now that she’s secured her spot, Thomas can be confident about the message she sent to her opponents from Minneapolis. “I feel like I’ve made the statement that I’ve been working hard these past few years and that I’m ready to go to Paris and compete for a gold medal, I’m ready to represent my country and just show the world what I can do,” said the 27-year-old in the interview.

…last year I finished with a silver medal in the 200 meters and a gold in the 4×1; so I’m hoping to follow that same trajectory and this year go from bronze to silver to gold,” Thomas stated about her plans for Paris. If she can indeed do that, what awaits her is more than a singular triumph.

A place among the elites beckons Gabby Thomas

Both Flo-Jo and Felix are considered to be among the best female sprinters the country has ever produced. To be in the same class with these icons would be a dream for any runner who has followed their footsteps. Naturally, Paris looks like the perfect stage where Thomas can fulfill her ambition of sitting with the veterans at the same table. FloJo achieved the feat in 1988, while Felix did it in 2012. Jonyer’s 21.34-second finish still remains the world record in women’s 200m sprint, but Thomas isn’t too far away herself.

In the semi-final race at the team trials, Gabby picked up the world-leading time as she clocked 21.78 seconds to finish the event. In the final, she secured her place in Team USA with 21.81 seconds on the clock. Considering her current momentum, will Gabby be able to become only the seventh American ever to win a gold in the women’s 200m race at the Olympic Games? We’ll have the answer in only a few week’s time!
