However, in a powerful show of support and recognition, Michael Johnson, the esteemed American retired sprinter renowned for his four Olympic gold medals and eight World Championships, took to X to endorse Letsile Tebogo’s exceptional talent.

In Johnson’s words, “There’s always talk of who’s the next great one in track. The hype and promise usually fizzles. But Letsile Tebogo is one of the rare ones I might bet on!” echoed a sentiment shared by many in the track and field community. Interestingly, Noah Lyles also features among those.

Back in November last year, Noah Lyles took a dig at World Athletics when Tebogo’s name was missing from the finalists for the 2023 Men’s Rising Star Award. “Quick question, what constitutes as a rising star? Because I’m shocked to see Tebogo is not on this list. Silver in the 100 Bronze in the 200 Broke 2 African records (one of them previously held by Franky Fredricks),” Noah wrote on that occasion.

Tebogo’s outstanding performance in South Africa has firmly placed him as a top contender for the Olympic 200m title in Paris. On February 17th, Letsile Tebogo of Botswana electrified the track at the Simbine Curro Classic Shoot-Out in Pretoria, South Africa. With astounding speed and precision, he dashed to a remarkable world record in the 300m sprint, clocking an astonishing 30.69 seconds. This breathtaking performance sliced more than a tenth of a second off the previous world best of 30.81, previously held by the renowned Wayde van Niekerk in Ostrava, Czech Republic, back in June 2017.

In a display of sheer dominance, Tebogo surged ahead right from the start, establishing an imposing lead as he navigated the bend with remarkable finesse. Maintaining his momentum down the home stretch, he further widened the gap, leaving his competitors trailing in his wake.

His triumph was emphatic, crossing the finish line with over a second to spare ahead of Gardeo Isaacs (31.91) and Bayapo Ndori (31.95), who claimed second and third positions, respectively.
