Just 150 odd days before the Paris Olympic session, the USA Track & Field authority has set the encouraging trial of the marathon for both categories. The scheduled event will take place in Orlando, where only the runners who qualified for the set standard will participate. The qualifying standard for the marathon was 2:37.00 for the women’s category. However, the time seemed to be excruciating for an enormous chunk of athletes who failed to surpass the same. But once an injured long-distance runner covered the trial in much less time.

The motivational story dates back to the 1984 Olympic Games, which held the inaugural marathon run for women’s track and field athletes. The gilded character that made history on that occasion was Joan Benoit Samuelson.

The motivational Olympic story that defied constraints

On January 17, the IG handle of USATF noted the inspiration Samuelson preached 40 years ago. To tickle the curious bone, the handle added, “It’s been 40 years since Joan Benoit-Samuelson overcame knee surgery to compete at the first-ever women’s U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Marathon”. Eventually, the athlete had to go through a minor knee surgery on April 25, 17 days before the coveted trial for the Olympic marathon. In midway, she also wretched up her left hamstring. But the double whammies couldn’t hinder Joan Benoit Samuelson’s chance as “She went on to win the Trials by 37 seconds to earn a historic berth in the first women’s Olympic marathon.” The story didn’t end there.

Three months after the trial, the American long-distance runner appeared on the Olympic platform. She had competitors like Ingrid Kristiansen, Grete Waltz, and Rosa Mota. But that couldn’t hold the then 27-year-old athlete back. Joan Benoit Samuelson enjoyed the victory, keeping a respectful distance from her fellow competitors. That made her the inaugural Olympic marathon champion in the women’s category. Joan Benoit Samuelson’s love affair with the marathon didn’t end in the 1984 LA Olympic games.

In 2008, Samuelson ran in the US Olympic team trials, finishing the race in 2:49.08 timing. That was the USA 50+ record. However, in 2010, Samuelson couldn’t make it into the Olympic trial for the marathon again, missing the qualifying time by a whisker.

That was the last time she appeared in the US Olympic team trial. But even in her old age, Joan Benoit Samuelson couldn’t let slip opportunities to wear her marathon shoes repeatedly. Her class remains a permanent, withering form.
