Ten years have passed, yet the Oscar Pistorius controversy still remains fresh in my memory. The South African Paralympian fell from grace in 2013 when he was convicted for the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. Surprisingly, the parole board tried his matter again and decided to reduce his 15-year-long sentence on Friday.

Oscar Pistorius will step out into the sunlight on January 5, 2024. However, the renowned Paralympian’s struggles are going to get even tougher as this new chapter of his life comes with uncertain financial prospects.

As per NPR, Oscar Pistorius shot Reeva Steenkamp four times on Valentine’s Day in 2013. Before this incident, his popularity was sky-high, and he was widely regarded as one of the world’s best runners. Interestingly, he had accumulated a comfortable nest egg of $5 million on the backs of his sporting achievements and lucrative partnership deals. He was the face of big brands such as Nike, Oakley, BT, Thierry Mugler, and Ossur, which brought him approximately $2 million a year in sponsorship revenue. After the murder conviction, these brands tore up their contracts with him.

Even the Icelandic blade manufacturer Ossur, who designed Pistorius’ prosthetic legs, dropped him as an ambassador. Although this affected his overall net worth, his treasury remained largely unaffected. A market expert named Clive Simpkins spoke to Forbes Africa to reveal, “His sponsorship revenues, although evidently worth a hefty sum of money, were not his sole means of support. Even without them, he’s unlikely to suffer financial deprivation”. But after over 11 years of incarceration and substantial legal costs, his net worth has come down to just $150,000.

Oscar Pistorius’ dramatic financial decline

The “blade runner” spent millions of dollars in his legal battle. Quite recently, he lost a significant sum when the parole board denied his request due to a technical error in dates. However, the authorities quickly corrected their mistake. They granted him parole on the basis of the minimum detention period served criteria on Friday. His parole comes with a five-year injunction where he will be monitored for anger management, especially where women are concerned.

The Department of Corrections spokesperson said that Oscar Pistorius has a “positive support system” that can rebuild his life. Reeva Steenkamp’s mother was satisfied with the conditions of his parole and saw this as a victory in itself. Now, it will depend on Oscar Pistorius to turn this $150,000 to millions. However, given his current reputation, that might be tough.
