‘mutually agreed’ or ‘fired’?

Northwestern University, after two months of igniting discussions about the departure of their head coach Shane Davis, made an official announcement. Recently, it took to its Twitter account and posted a message about it, “Volleyball Head Coach Shane Davis and Northwestern Athletics Mutually Agree To Part Ways.” However, there remains some room for speculation in the announcement.

As per the recent post by Lincoln Arneal, Shane Davis was “fired” from the team two months ago. Right now, Erica Handley is the only coach listed on its roster page.

Referring to the decision, Northwestern’s athletic director Derrick Gragg said, “We would like to thank Coach Davis for everything he has done over his eight seasons leading our volleyball program. We have mutually agreed that based on the performance of the program during his tenure, it is time for a change in leadership.”

During his eight-season tenure, Shane Davis, guided the team in their 103-128 overall and 45-105 conference matches record-making. However, Davis never found success in making the Wildcats achieve a Big Ten record and even failed to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. But, this might not be the only reason for not enlisting the coach for the upcoming season. In addition to the team’s on-court struggle, Davis brought additional tension to the off-court scrutiny.
