“Every tournament is the biggest tournament,” is what Lee got to say before he sets his eye on the ultimate international glory. After defeating his competitor, Gulomjon Abdullaev in the semis with a leading score of 14-4 on grounds of technical superiority, Lee shared, I’ve always thought that each tournament is the biggest tournament. That’s how my mind works.” Reflecting on how he has been dealing with his coaches to align with his way of approach, Lee said, “So I’ve been joking with the coaches, ‘This is the Olympics, right?’ Because I don’t feel like it’s different from any other tournament.”

Competing in the 57-kilogram bracket, Spencer Lee defeated Uzbekistan’s powerhouse Abdullaev in less than three minutes. Carrying himself with strength and poise, Lee is now looking forward to earning gold for his nation in Paris. But as he steps into the final round, the challenge intensifies.

In the final round of the Paris Olympics, Lee faces Japan’s Rei Higuchi, a seasoned athlete with medals from the World Championships and an Olympic silver from the 2016 Rio Games. Higuchi will be aiming to upgrade his previous Olympic performance and stand atop the podium in Paris.

Spencer Lee’s journey to the final was far from easy. He had to battle against China’s Wanhao Zou and Bekzat Almaz Uulu of Kyrgyzstan in the initial rounds. Yet, with his resilient mindset, Lee emerged victorious, defeating Wanhao Zou 3-2 and Bekzat Almaz Uulu with a 12-2 technical fall.
