For former Minnesota Gophers wrestler Gable Stevenson, life hasn’t been all too easy since his glory moment in Tokyo. His decision to explore the professional wrestling waters after winning gold at the last Olympic Games wasn’t exactly a smooth sail and allegations of being a Kurt Angle rip-off were never too far away. However, as new developments come to the fore, the 23-year-old’s future has sparked speculations about the possibility of bagging more honors on the biggest stage.

In a recent post on X, Gable’s latest professional bump has been shared with the world. The official WrestleOps account wrote, “Gable Steveson has been released by WWE.” With the revelation made public by the Wrestling Observer, fans now ponder the possibility of seeing Stevenson donning the USA stripes once again at the Olympics.

However, not everyone is happy about how Stevenson opted to step into pro wrestling instead of trying to develop his Olympic resume further. Many fans seem to be of the opinion that Gable just needs to come to terms with his own decisions and bid adieu to bigger dreams.

And yet, considering the fact that the iconic Penn State alum David Taylor won his first Olympic gold at the age of 30, Stevenson’s chances of adding more gold from the IOC aren’t all gone just yet. Furthermore, Cornell’s Kyle Dake was also 30 when he first saw the world from the top of the Olympic podium.

Now, it waits to be seen if the former Big Ten champ’s fate has some good news to offer in the coming days. But his road has been nothing but bumpy in recent months.

The former Gopher, like many other wrestling stars from the country, wanted to experience the electric world that is professional wrestling, prompting him to sign with WWE only a month after his gold-winning performance at the Tokyo Olympics. However, his NXT debut didn’t go down as Stevenson had hoped for and things went further south since. The WWE allegedly denied Stevenson the opportunity to pursue his Olympic dreams because of the contract, and that drew serious ire of the country’s fans and wrestlers alike. The signing looked like a botched move and the Indiana native hinted at another transition, this time into the octagon for a shot at MMA/UFC.

However, the plan never panned out despite people like Daniel Cormier having immense faith in Stevenson’s possibilities in the UFC. Now that his run-in with both professional organizations seems to have finally ended, it waits to be seen if the three-time Big Ten gold medalist can turn things around for the better and focus his true potential to make LA2028 the Olympics that witnesses his triumphant comeback.
