The major attraction is the participating teams that keep the spectators on the edge of their seats. While most of the teams have yet to perform, Team Illinois is already shining among the competitors. In a recent match, team Illinois defeated their opponent, team SUIE, on the wrestling season mat.

Even though the SUIE wrestling team tried their best to survive in the match, they were pinned by team Illinois. With this win, Illinois added another remarkable achievement to their kitty.

Team Illinois shows real “business” in wrestling arena

On Thursday, November 2, Team Illinois defeated Team SUIE with a remarkable 28-7 score. In a recent Tweet by Illinois Wrestling, it was quite correctly captioned as, “Took care of business.” It was truly real business, as Illinois furthered their undefeated streak to nine matches. And it was led by Edmond Ruth. In the match, the Redshirt Junior from Team USA locked horns with Dom Lopez from SIUE. The fierce battle featured not only a win but also a remarkable 20-6 score earned in four takedowns while securing the bonus points.

In an exclusive interview with Illini Wrestling, Head coach Mike Poeta said, “Today was the first match of the season, and you could tell it was…We did some good stuff. Some guys really excelled, but I think it is pretty glaring that there are some things we need to work on.” 

He added, “The guys wrestled okay. I am completely fine with how it went, but we need to clean some stuff up. Our conditioning needs to get better and we need to get better on bottom. We know what we need to train, and I am okay with the start.”  Even though the recent match featured Edmond Ruth, many others added to the team’s victory.

Team Illinois Point Scorers

On the other hand, Redshirt Sophomore not only emerged victorious but also earned a technical fall over the opponent. In addition, he defeated Danny Martinez, securing 19-4 in 5:46 minutes, displaying six takedowns and an escape. At the same time, Justin Cardani clinched three points for team Illinois after pinning Davian Guanajuato with 4-1.

Furthermore, Joe Roberts kicked off Brock Woodcock, securing 4-0, whereas Luke Luffman defeated Bryson Buhk with 15-4. Overall, team Illinois showcased prowess on the court throughout. Will team Illinois be able to take its undefeated streak forward?
