A.J. Ferrari continues to be an icon among the collegiate wrestling connoisseurs across the country. While his recent stint at the Soldier Salute didn’t end well for Ferrari, the wrestler remains a role model for many wrestlers from different colleges. The Southern Scuffle just concluded in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Ferrari made an uncanny appearance at the showdown after a wrestler’s livid tribute to his colleague.

The Indiana wrestling team completed the tournament with a program-making record of 134 points at the McKenzie Arena. Sixth-year senior Dan Fongaro claimed first place in the 141lb category. After his victory, Fongaro’s celebrations sent out ripples across the attendees making many remember Ferrari’s bizarre disqualification from only days ago.

A.J. Ferrari gets a nod at an unlikely stage

Even after winning in his weight class, A.J. Ferrari was met with a sudden disqualification as he engaged in physical altercations with Zach Glazier. Unable to contain his excitement, Ferrari got a little too excited for many, leading to his dismissal from the tournament. However, it looks like his eccentric style resonates with many wrestlers in the country more than previously thought.

In a recent Twitter post, wrestling photographer Tony Rotundo shared Dan Fongaro’s image moments after he secured his top spot after taking down Stanford’s Jason Miranda. In the post, Fongaro can be seen taking a cue from Ferrari and not afraid to show the tumultuous emotional rollercoaster that’s raging on inside him after an adrenaline-fuelled bout. This has been the Hoosiers’ biggest achievement in the Southern Scuffle since 2009, and understandably the redshirt senior went a little overboard.

Is this going to become a thing?”, reads the post. The photographer does seem mildly concerned that more wrestlers and athletes are following the path of Ferrari and choosing to display their sentiments for the world to witness instead of maintaining poise and grace even after subduing their opponents. But Ferrari’s off-mat antics won’t get him back on the top.

Ferrari has a long road ahead of him

While Fongaro’s celebration isn’t nearly as offensive as Ferrari’s recent adamant behavior at the Soldier Salute, the former still has some hills to climb before matching his colleague’s collegiate record. A.J. has won gold at both the Big 12 Championships as well as the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.

If that wasn’t enough to be remembered as a collegiate wrestling sensation, Ferrari also has a Cadet World Championship medal in the bag. As Ferrari looks to recover his lost seasons due to a horrific car crash, he is girding up his loins to leave a staunch mark on his beloved arena.
