Over the decades after wrestling’s inclusion at the Olympic Games, the USA has established itself as one of the most dominant nations in the sport. This year too, Team USA’s Olympic hopes are running on a high horse, and the ongoing Pan American Championships are only bolstering the claims. With a grand start to this year’s Pan Am Championships in Mexico, the US wrestlers seem to have more in their engines to help the team cross the finishing line gracefully.

Yesterday, the Greco-Roman squad got the ball rolling in a more-than-decent fashion as they racked up seven medals at the end of Day 1. Day 2 of the tournament in Acapulco, Mexico proved to be just as impressive, as several of the nation’s biggest wrestling names earned podium finishes by their own rights.

USA retains its pace at the Pan American Championships

The official account of the USA Wrestling on X has been going berserk trying to keep up with the wrestlers’ continuous achievements at the Pan American Championships and wrote, “The U.S. women’s freestyle team opened the Pan-American Championships with six medals“, in its latest post. Arizona’s Audrey Jimenez was the first US wrestler to secure a podium finish on the second day of the tournament as she took down Canadian Katie Dutchak to win the bronze in the women’s 50kg event. However, it was Helen Maroulis who was the first under the spotlight.

The 2016 Olympic gold medalist and Sunkist Kids member Helen Maroulis is considered one of the country’s top talents and she proved her worth once again on the mat by registering a 4-1 decision win over Brazil’s Gulia Oliveira in the 57kg weight class. The gold-winning performance was replicated soon afterward as the 2023 Pan American Championships bronze medalist Kayla Miracle bagged USA’s second gold of the day in the women’s 62kg category.

Despite a defeat in the women’s 68kg quarterfinals Alex Glaude was determined to turn things around, and she did so in an impressive fashion as she won the bronze medal match later in the night. Greco-Roman wrestler Noah Wachsmuth returned to action next and picked up another bronze, while Alan Vera had to settle for the silver after conceding a defeat in the Greco-Roman 97kg weight class. With that, Team USA finished the second day of the Pan Am Championships with an incredible six medals to its name.
