From Passion to Profession

In an exclusive interview with FCA Wrestling, Casey Cunnigham, the head assistant coach for Nittany Lions, said, “Most of my life wrestling was my god. that’s what I did. A lot of people turn to alcohol and drugs. For me when I had problems I wanted to work out I went to wrestling, to lifting, to running,…when I was 21 years old, wrestling was taken away from me because I got hurt.”

The exceptional wrestling club in the USA, Nittany Lions, has contributed gifted wrestlers to the world mat and features devoted coaches to train these wrestlers. The wrestling journey of Nittany’s head assistant coach was not on the wrestling mat, he was supposed to wrestle with life. Although Casey Cunningham had an injury that made him leave wrestling for the rest of his life, he believed in what Jesus had planned for him.

In the same interview, Casey added, “At the same time our wrestling coach decided he was going to resign he said he needed to get his in balance and that god had become a thing in his life.” Eventually, the resignation of the head coach turned out to be fortunate for Casey as he dived into the sport not as a wrestler but as a coach this time.

According to Casey, His newfound belief in Jesus, instilled by the resigning head coach, was instrumental in taking up the new role. As he puts it, “I said, God, if you want me to continue to wrestle, I will. If not, you know, then what’s my next journey? And I felt like I wasn’t close to accomplishing what I could in wrestling. And I just felt like, God was saying I’m giving you this gift. Now go do it.”
