The 2023-24 NCAA Wrestling season has become the center stage of drama right from the get-go. The Maryland Terrapins and the Pittsburgh Panthers recently clashed in a high-voltage dual that had everyone guessing the ultimate winner till the end. In the midst of the back-and-forth tussle, a young wrestler from Maryland delivered an unexpected tremor to Pittsburgh Wrestling.

Braxton Brown is a redshirt sophomore who recently fought a weight-class debut against the Panthers. The young wrestler caused massive shockwaves as he landed a major upset against Pittsburgh in an unexpected turn of events. A social media upload showcased Brown taking the win after a big bout as he left a bitter taste in the mouths of Pittsburgh Wrestling fans.

Wrestling star debuts out of comfort zone and usurps major opponent

Braxton Brown usually wrestles in the 125-pound weight class and is one of America’s top wrestlers in that category. However, Brown represented the Terps in the 133-pound weight class as they clashed against the Panthers in a wrestling dual. Big Ten Wrestling tweeted a video of Brown on its official X account, showcasing his excellent technique against a major opponent. The tweet carried the caption, “Hot start for @TerpsWrestling! Braxton Brown makes his 133 debut and upsets No. 13 Vinnie Santaniello of Pittsburgh.”

 Brown went into the second bout between both colleges and delivered Maryland its first win of the dual. Brown wrestled with a composed mindset and patiently scored points while defending himself properly.

The match ended with Brown taking a decision victory by 6-3 against USA’s 13th-ranked collegiate wrestler. While Brown gave an early advantage to Maryland, the Terps failed to capitalize on his efforts against Pittsburgh Wrestling. In fact, while he caused an upset against one wrestler, Pittsburgh caused an upset against the entire squad of Maryland.

Pittsburgh Wrestling makes a comeback despite initial pitfalls

Maryland’s wrestlers from the lower weight classes, including Braxton Brown, set up a really good platform for the Terps. However, the Pittsburgh Wrestling team prevailed in the end and made a comeback despite initial pitfalls. While Maryland won several ranked matches, the Panthers won their bouts via technical falls to take big strides to catch up.

Eventually, the Pittsburgh Wrestling team prevailed in the end after gaining a five-point advantage. The Panthers defeated the Terrapins with a score of 21-16 and forced Maryland to swallow its first loss of the season. While his team lost the match, it also gained a reliable wrestler in the 133-pound category. Will the Terps be able to make use of Brown’s talent and prevent a turnover next time?
