While the U.S. women’s gymnasts have been under the limelight for all the right reasons, 19-year-old Fred Richard is all buckled up to snatch the spotlight. With a historic win in the World Championships 2023, Richard has just paved his way into the Paris Olympics 2024.

At the age of just 19, Richard has earned his position as the first US male athlete to win the all-around medal for the World Gymnastics Championship since 2010. Besides being the youngest male athlete to grab the title he is also a social media sensation. And topping this, he is considered the third-best gymnast across the globe. But as it seems, Richard is not ready to settle for the third position!

Fred Richard’s road to Olympic greatness: from bronze to world’s best

It was 2010 when Jonathan Horton won the bronze for the men’s all-around category in the World Championships and after fourteen long years, Fred Richard secured another bronze in the same category. Besides being the star of NCAA championships and rocking in the high bar he is to be ‘the greatest’ with the Olympics knocking at the door.

In a recent interview with Sam Oldham, Richard was asked about his feelings regarding his making into the U.S. men’s gymnasts team as the third all-around best gymnast in the world. To this Richard replied, I don’t feel like the third-best gymnast in the world. When I go to the gym, I feel like the greatest gymnast of all time. He further reflected on how he has been preparing himself for the greatest event of the year, the Summer Olympics 2024.

Richard stated that he has started to conceive things long-term now. Besides being super-excited for the Paris Olympics he is also thinking about how long he’ll be in the sport. Thus, instead of setting the Olympics as the main goal he has been working towards building himself to be the best. “I train like I’m the best in the world”, reflected Richard.

19-year-old Richard chasing gymnastic greatness beyond medals

Richard’s love for the sport transcends the boundaries of winning and losing. He further shared that although he might not be able to prove that he is the best in the next few months or the upcoming Olympics he won’t lose his determination as he believes the right time will surely come for him. Alongside Yul Moldauer, Paul Juda, and Brody Malone; Fred Richard will be a part of the US Paris Olympics Men’s Gymnastics team.
