Opinion: Will Kaylee McKeown Surpass Cate Campbell to Become the Most Successful Australian Swimming Sensation of All Time?

The swimming community has witnessed a plethora of competitions and rivalries in its realm. Today one of the most talked about duo are the Australian swimmers Cate Campbell and Kaylee Mckeown. Both of them have made their hold in the swimming community and their performances are worth gazing at. Cate Campbell at present course of time carries more accomplishments when compared to Mckeown. However, McKeown with her performances and gaining the first position in Berlin at the Swimming World Cup 2023 has portrayed her caliber to surpass Campbell’s records.

Cate Campbell is one of the decorated Australian swimmers and has her eyes set on becoming the first Australian swimmer to compete at five Olympic Games. She is a current multiple world record holder who has attained two bronze medals at the 2008 Summer Olympics, and a gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Not just this, she has also attained a gold and a silver medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics and adding to that another gold medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Currently, she is the world record holder in the Long Course 4 x 100 m Freestyle Relay with Team Australia. Campbell also holds the record for the short course 100 m freestyle. Apart from this, she was also one of the flagbearers for Australia at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Recently in the Swimming World Cup 2023, she delivered a good performance in her events. In the women’s 50m freestyle event, Campbell secured the first position in a stupendous time of 24.10.

On Day 3 of Berlin, Campbell stood clinched silver at the Women’s 100 Freestyle. She finished the race in a time of 53.26 ending up just behind Siobhan Haughey. However, she couldn’t make it up to the podium to be part of the $60,0000. Kaylle Mckeown nabbed this victory instead. 

Kaylee Mckeown’s accomplishments in the swimming realm 

Kaylee Mckeown has been the one of the top names in Australia’s swimming sensations after her thrilling performance at the Australian Olympic Trials. This Australian swimmer is a triple Olympic gold medalist, she has win all of them from the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. She nabbed gold in the 100m, 200m backstroke, and the 4x100m medley. With this, she also gained gold in the 200m backstroke at the 2022 World Championships in Budapest.

Mckeown has multiple world records secured under her name. She is the world record holder in the long course 100-meter backstroke. With this, she holds the record for both long course and short course 200-meter backstroke. Sinche she was 15 years of age, Mckeown stepped her foot in water and since then she has just climbed up the stairs. The exemplary performances by her in the Swimming World Cup 2023 is enough to say everything about her progress.

In the 2023 World Cup, she had her intentions clear to attain the win. On day 3, the 8th of October 2023, she surpassed her own third world record of the weekend by bagging the win with a time of 2:06.47 in the 200 backstroke. Here, she was more than three seconds off her own world record of 2:03.14 which she made in March. However, in this event herself she surpassed the record set by another Australian Emily Seebohm.

Not just this, she also broke Seebohm’s record in the 100m backstrokes on the 7th of October 2023. Following this, she aimed at Liu Xang’s mark in the 50 backstrokes with a 27.24 on Day 1 of the World Cup. Leaving Cate Campbell behind, Mckeown made her way to the podium, becoming the overall winner in the leg 1 of the 2023 Swimming World Cup. She attained $12,000 standing beside Qin Haiyang.

Is Kaylee Mckeown ready to defeat Cate Campbell in becoming the Australian swimming sensation?

Apart from Kaylee Mckeown’s all-over performances, her showdowns at the Swimming World Cup are an answer to the doubters. She, with her wonderful portrayal of skills, has proved her prowess in the swimming realm. After bagging extraordinary victories for herself in meet 1 of the Swimming World Cup, Mckeown has created a wonderful record on day 1 of the Leg 2 in Athens, she won the women’s 50m backstroke in 27.02. This is a new Oceanic record, and now she is the 2nd fastest performer of all time. China’s swimmer Xiang Liu is on the first position with 26.98 just 0.04 above than the Australian swimmer. Leaving behind some of the best swimmers, she now stands in second position. After exceptional achievements like these, I think it is safe to say that she has the potential to surpass Cate Campbell to become the most successful Australian swimming sensation of all time.
