Rodeo can offer some of the most gruesome of injuries with its heightened requirements of agility and alertness. A slip of a hand or a misstep at landing is easily prone to cause a life-threatening injury. In one of these live instances more recently, it was a 19-year-old rising talent from Turin who fell to a fearsome accident, etching a mark for a lifetime.

Austin Broderson, an Alberta native, has only begun his rodeo journey joining PRCA in 2023. For his second circuit event, the 19-year-old was competing at the National Western Stock Show rodeo last week. But in lieu of an unfortunate occurrence, Broderson suffered ‘one of the worst bareback riding wrecks in recent memory’. Following the gruesome witness, the youngster has grown to attain prayers and concern from the spectators.

The youngster provides a beacon of hope

On the 15th of January, Austin Broderson encountered a freak accident when his bareback riggin began slipping during performance. The mishap landed the youngster under his horse, who continued to buck and run around the arena, riggin attached. The youngster was rushed to Denver Health Hospital and was revealed to have incurred multiple injuries. Fractured C-7 vertebrae, broken nasal bone, fractured hip and bruises, and no feeling in his left arm. However, 10 days and surgery later, the rising rodeo talent shared that he was up and better.

“The young bareback rider, Austin Broderson is being released from the hospital today,” National Western added on Instagram, providing an update. The post further stated that Austin would be moving to Canada and continuing his rehabilitation there. The treatment required a massive sum for support, prompting a ‘GoFundMe’ page. As of Jan 25th, a little over $80,000 had been accumulated, helping him get to his home country. Through and beyond, the rodeo community has been by the youngster’s side.

Rodeo enthusiasts breathe a sigh of relief

Austin Broderson’s update came as grateful news for many rodeo fans who witnessed the harrowing incident and followed through the journey. “Wonderful news! You are in the prayers of many people. Stay strong!” one of the fans expressed, wishing him well. While one sent hope, another cherished the unexpected turnout. Sending sunshine and love for a quick recovery! Colorado loves you!” the first one read. “A walking miracle, best of luck Austin!” the next one followed.

The rodeo community further continued with genuine relief and gratitude over the update with many warming notes. “Praying for the best outcomes and recovery. Thanks for the update- this is amazing to see!!” a spectator wrote. Another one added, “Our whole family is so grateful for this update!! Continuing to send you all of the healing vibes, Austin!” Following his move to Canada, Austin’s family has assured to keep the fans updated on the progress.
