Skateboarding is usually seen as a pursuit for the young and daring. It is equally a devotion for the mature and audacious. Likewise, a skateboarding luminary hailing from Santa Cruz, California, at the age of 64, is poised to partake in the World Skate Games in Rome within the approaching month. Her ambition extends beyond merely clinching a medal; she aspires to secure a position in the Olympics in 2024.

Oyama embarked on her skateboarding journey at the age of 13 and has garnered an array of national and global accolades in the slalom, downhill and park disciplines. In addition to her skateboarding prowess, she holds the roles of a graphic designer, a mother to three, and a grandmother to two. This firebrand age-defying wonder is a source of motivation for skateboarders of various age groups and genders, who revere her expertise, elegance, and indomitable spirit.

NBC Bay Arena shined a light on her talents, to which all the fans were surprised and happy. She expressed saying, “And I asked one of the people that was putting on the race, you know, ‘How come I wasn’t I invited?” and they said, ‘when a chick goes down the hill, it doesn’t look as gnarly”. Her qualification for this event transpired after her victory in the national championship in Texas earlier this year. She anticipates fierce competition from skaters originating from Brazil, France, Germany, and several other nations.

The World Skate Games are a biennial gathering that highlights the crème de la crème in skateboarding, roller skating, and inline skating. This event is coordinated by World Skate, the global governing body for these athletic disciplines. The 2023 iteration is slated to take place in Rome from November 27th to December 5th. This sporting congregation will encompass talent from every sleepy little hamlet of the globe vying for the top spot. There are over 4,000 athletes hailing from more than 100 nations. Oyama will serve as the representative for the United States in the slalom skateboarding division, a category that involves navigating through a course marked by cones with swiftness and precision.
